The Old Man And The Sea

Ernest Hemingway

There is nothing quite like another hospital admission to make you re-evaluate your priorities. Now home, juggling glucose and electrolytes like knives, I am shuffle walking into a new phase of my life. I have no idea how to plot my path, or even where I’m going. It is all and only one breath after the other.

Whenever uncertain, we often seek refuge and comfort in familiarity, be that music, friends, scent, environments, or even food to feed our nostalgia. Whenever I need certainty, I am naturally drawn back to the brutal simplicity of Hemingway. No writer devastates with such brevity, nor whole heartedly gives while they’re taking. Hemingway, right now, feels like home for me.

‘The Old Man And The Sea’, may not exactly be described as an imaginative or inspirational tale, yet it generously affords us the wisdom to reflect on our one true victory – the human spirit as unflinching and strong.

  1. Sorry to hear about the hospital admission. I love The Old Man and the Sea. It definitely offers wisdom and reflection.

  2. This is one of my all time favourite books. It is stark in some ways but is also, as you say, expressed with such unflinching simplicity, how can you not love it. I found it very comforting to read 🙂

  3. Wonderful to hear someone feeling the same about this work. Thank you so much for your thoughts. I really appreciate you taking the time ❤️

  4. Not at all! I enjoy your posts. It takes me a while to get round to visiting people’s blogs once I’ve got through the daily mill and grind but I always intend to👌 Hope you are doing well ☀️
